'Love That Lasts'- our thoughts on the book and why you needed it yesterday

May 22, 2018

This year Nick and I have been really diving into books speaking on how intentional God is with us. We were in Barnes & Noble a little while back and I noticed a book titled 'Love That Lasts' and I flipped through it to kind of get a vibe for what is was about. I was already hooked while standing in line to purchase it, but not for the reasons you would think. At first glance, I thought it would be about how to make your marriage last and become stronger through The Lord and all that jazz. Now, YES, it does have a lot of awesome insight about how to grow your marriage with God at the foundation, but there is a lot more to it than that.

It has goodness and truth that I needed when I was in high school and college. It has truths that I needed as an eighteen-year-old college freshman, single and unaware of what God intended for me in romantic relationships.

One of the main points that I truly appreciated about this book is the fact that it came from both of the authors. Jeff and Alyssa bounced off of each other in telling their stories and we majorly related to them in multiple ways. It was honest, real, raw, and not only put to rest SO many questions I had but it also shed light on different perspectives I had in marriage.

Another key point that was a major takeaway- - seeking mentorship. I had honestly never thought about seeking wisdom and community from married couples who have "been there, done that" and the knowledge they are willing to share. Community and mentorship in our church has become pivotal to us and our joy and success in marriage. It's helped us to better understand teamwork and the benefits to leaning on community during trials.

As for my younger self, I wish I could have understood the depths of God's love and His intentions for my love life. I genuinely believe any young woman who is struggling with dating or relationships in general should pick this book up. As for young men, I think it's extremely critical to have wisdom poured into them in regards to pursuing women, dating, and being intentional with them. The fact that this story is told by husband and wife makes it beyond easy to read and understand and gives excellent points for both genders.

It's definitely not written for just married couples. It talks on dating relationships, and it also speaks on singleness. I think one of the things I appreciated the most was so upfront they both were. There's no fluff or sugar coating anything. Our society truly distorts relationships and love, and the Bethkes shed some serious light on what God actually called for relationships.

Love That Lasts is genuinely a way of investing in yourself. It has truly been beneficial to read and hear from others that have walked through similar battles, only to show what God's redemption looks like. He calls us to love, He calls us to have community, and He calls us to be intentional with each other.

This book did exactly that. It's loving, communal, and intentional.

So for the girl or guy reading this blog, let me give you some advice- - put this on your reading list now. I mean it when I say it has left a lasting impression on us and I celebrate that fact. God is GOOD. He is intentional and wants us to have and embrace the love that HE desires for us. It doesn't matter how old you are or what season of life you are in- - I promise you will soak up these truths.

OH and there are study books too and I didn't know about that until this past week- -so we will be getting on that ASAP!
